More funding for projects to help find jobs post COVID-19

The following media release was issued by the Queensland Government:

Another multi-million dollar round of funding will go towards job-assisting projects for community organisations under the highly successful Skilling Queenslanders for Work program.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Skilling Queenslanders for Work was a crucial part of her Government’s ongoing plan to recover from the worldwide economic impact of COVID-19.

“This is a program which has helped, and will continue to help, workers to gain job-ready skills on community projects, and enter the labour market with confidence,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Applications open today to be involved in the second round of this year’s $90 million project funding pool for community-based not-for-profit organisations, local councils and school P&Cs, to provide hands on skills.

“As we continue reinvigorating our economy it is important that people looking for work can access local support and guidance to prepare them for new opportunities.”

Minister for Training and Skills Development Shannon Fentiman said the last round of funding saw $42 million go to more than 200 projects to assist around 5,000 Queenslanders to get training.

“Skilling Queenslanders for Work has a proven track record for achieving results and has seen more than 31,000 participants go on to get a job thanks to the program,” Ms Fentiman said.

“We have a plan: Unite and Recover for Queensland Jobs – which includes continuing to invest in training so Queenslanders have the skills for more jobs in more industries.”

“Now more than ever, the Palaszczuk Government is focused on getting more Queenslanders back to work as our economy recovers from COVID-19.

“Queensland Rugby Union is one organisation which has had great success with Skilling Queenslanders for Work with a 100 per cent success rate for their Ballymore Park and Enoggera Creek Reclamation project.”

Skilling Queenslanders for Work funds skills development, training and job opportunities for jobseekers, disengaged or disadvantaged Queenslanders through a suite of targeted skills and training programs.

More than 70 per cent of participants find work, take on further training or return to school around 12 months after exiting a Skilling Queenslanders for Work project.

Community-based not-for-profit organisations, local councils and school Parent and Friends or Parent and Citizens associations should check the eligibility requirements. The closing date for the second round is 8 October 2020.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative represents a significant investment of $420 million over six years to support up to 54,000 Queenslanders into work.
